Montenegro weather by month: coast and mountains

Here is Montenegro's weather month by month for the coast and the mountains.

Montenegro is small, but it climbs from sea level to over 2,500 metres in under an hour’s drive. That gives it a Mediterranean coast and an alpine interior. The mountains around the Bay of Kotor also trap a lot of rain in winter, so the bay is one of the wettest places on the European coast between November and March, and one of the sunniest in summer.

Montenegro weather month by month

  • November to February: Mild, 11 to 15 °C, but rainy. Kotor is peaceful and many beach hotels close.
  • March and April: Changeable spring weather, 15 to 20 °C, snow still on the peaks above the bay.
  • May and June: Warm and green, 22 to 28 °C, sea from 19 to 23 °C. Ideal for Kotor and Perast before the cruise season peaks.
  • July and August: Hot, 29 to 32 °C, sea 24 to 26 °C. Budva and Kotor are crowded, especially on cruise-ship days.
  • September: Warm sea, fewer people, very good for swimming and boat trips.
  • October: 18 to 22 °C, the first autumn rains arrive late in the month.

Durmitor and the north

Žabljak and Durmitor National Park are cool even in summer, with daytime around 20 to 24 °C, which makes July and August perfect for hiking and rafting on the Tara. From December to March the area is a small ski resort.

Best time to visit Montenegro

Go in June or September for the coast, July and August for the mountains, and avoid November to February if you mainly want beach weather.
